The standard favicon size in browsers is still 16x16 points corresponding to 32x32 pixels on high resolution screens. There is no need to still include a favicon.ico file in your root directory unless you want to support IE 10 or older. SVG would be nice, but is not supported by all browsers.
14 dec. 2013 · You should always provide a 128x128 icon; it's used during installation and by the Chrome Web Store. Extensions should also provide a 48x48 icon, which is used in the extensions management page (chrome://extensions).

21 sept. 2016 · It seems like this is a new design, introduced in the latest version of Chrome. To revert to the old design, go to chrome://flags and set "Material Design in the browser's top chrome" to "Non-material". For me, at least, this puts the tabs back to their previous size.
16 apr. 2012 · In my knowledge, there is no way to change the profile icon in Google Chrome. However, you can sync your Google account and it will pull your Google+ profile icon as your chrome profile icon. If you want, you can sync two of your Google accounts having profile pictures you'd like.
