Google Chrome will limit ad blockers starting June 2024. Google's sales pitch for Manifest V3 is that, by limiting extensions, the browser can be lighter on resources, and Google can protect your privacy from extension developers.
The underlying changes make it much easier for users to install extensions without accidentally giving the extension developer total control over their browser. It does make ad-blocking more complicated. But it also prevents whole categories of browser-extension-based malware.
Google is throttling chrome adblock users. For a few days now anything I use in chrome has been so painfully slow and laggy. chat windows freezing while typing on Linkedin, Youtube getting stuck mid scroll. Absolutely head-doing. Uninstalled adblock extension - Voila! back to normal.

The deal is just to have Google as the default search engine - like when you open a new tab, or type in the address bar. You can also set FF to use pretty much any other search engine instead, in which case Google gets nothing from you. This isn't some special deal just for Google either.
I spend almost all of my time on websites that I am logged into and I let them show me personalized ads so they can make some additional revenue. Exceptions are Reddit and YouTube where I am paying for Premium and have ads turned off via the websites options.
